Un auto de lujo con la potencia suficiente dentro de la bahía del motor para ser considerado también un coche deportivo o como algunas personas lo designan: un gran turismo, el cual se convierte en un notable éxito en competiciones con pedigrí, no parece ser un caso particularmente único en el mundo automotriz…
Algunas marcas de carros de ambos lados de los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico han producido ejemplares que coinciden parcial o completamente con la descripción anterior: de Nissan a Chrysler, de Bentley a Cadillac, de Bugatti a Duesenberg, de Alfa Romeo a Auburn, de Ferrari a Shelby, de Jaguar a Packard, de Mercedes-Benz a Ford, de Holden a Hudson, de Maseratti a Stutz, de Aston Martin a AMC…
Quiero decir, hay una buena cantidad de ejemplos involucrando vehículos que mezclaron lujo, deportividad y un baño de gloria en competiciones automovilísticas, pero en el caso de mi invitado para esta publicación, no es solo acerca de esas características y no me malinterpretes, esas cosas son relevantes, por supuesto…
Sin embargo, en la época cuando la New Class (Nueva Clase) de BMW fue introducida en el mercado, la marca de Bavaria estaba luchando para permanecer activa en un panorama económico difícil, porque en los 50s, la compañía sufrió una crisis financiera importante.
La carencia de atractivo de sus productos para una clientela cada vez más afluente, puso a BMW en una situación donde necesitaba desesperadamente cambiar su imagen de fabricante de autos lujosos pero no rentables o básicos y motocicletas, que no se sintonizaban con los gustos de la época.
Precisamente, la New Class, a la cual pertenece mi invitado hoy: el BMW 3.5 CSL (E9) de 1973, un Coupé de Tamaño Mediano 2 Puertas Techo Duro Notchback / Gran Turismo / Auto Deportivo – Auto de Carreras Grupo 2 para el European Touring Car Championship (Campeonato Europeo de Autos de Turismo) / Deutsche Rennsport Meisterchaft (Campeonato Alemán de Carreras), es una línea de vehículos ubicada en medio.
De hecho, la Neue Klasse sentó las bases de una nueva reputación para la Bayerische Motoren Werke: desde entonces la marca llegó a ser asociada con lujo, desempeño, deportividad, produciendo coches con las suficientes agallas para tener un rol prominente en los deportes a motor (un prestigio perdido hace mucho tiempo) y todos estos factores tuvieron un impacto positivo directo en su estatus financiero.
El BMW 3.5 CSL, una designación que a propósito aplica al carro de carreras, ya que la versión de calle, ofrecida para propósitos de homologación, presentaba un motor 3.0 L, mientras la versión para competición ofrecía más desplazamiento y muchas otras modificaciones, permitidas en el Grupo 2, incluyendo un kit de carrocería especial con guardafangos abombados y fue el primer trabajo de la naciente División M – Motorsport.
Curiosamente, el CSL fue apodado “Batimóvil”, por causa del paquete aerodinámico completo diseñado para mejorar su desempeño y finalmente derrotar al Ford Capri y al Porsche 911, sus anteriores verdugos (ilegal para uso en calle en Alemania, pero bastante llamativo cuando era aplicado parcialmente a la versión “de serie”), que le da una apariencia general más bien “gótica”, la cual por cierto fue clave para su éxito en los diferentes campeonatos en que participó…
Entre diseño y producción hay tantos procesos involucrados, tanta gente que puede tomar buenas y malas decisiones (estás últimas son tomadas en forma regular, particularmente cuando se trata de ahorrar dinero y complacer a los accionistas, incluso si significa arruinar el producto), que usualmente encuentras una enorme diferencia entre el concepto original y el producto final…
Con Mattel y sus productos: Hot Wheels y Matchbox, eso es dolorosamente obvio y por eso es que tenía bajas espectativas cuando todavía estaba adquiriendo productos de líneas de las categorías Regular, Adulta y eventualmente De Lujo: desde 2018, dejé de desperdiciar el dinero en esos artículos, porque me cansé de su reiterada mediocridad (una combinación de bajo control de calidad y alto precio de venta, que es simplemente inaceptable), de los productos del gigante rojo…
Mis invitados para esta reseña, los cuales conseguí a través del mercado primario, en un par de tiendas minoristas locales, hace más o menos 5 años, son hasta cierto punto una excepción a la mediocridad consistente de HW y lo explicaré de inmediato: primero, aprecio el trabajo de Fraser Campbell en términos de diseño, porque es una muy buena representación del carro de carreras CSL, teniendo en mente las limitaciones de un auto de juguete de la marca del logo llameante.
Tienen carrocería en diecast y chasis plástico, en blanco y negro respectivamente, con un nivel de detalle decente, hay una buena dosis de realismo; los trabajos de pintura fueron hechos en blanco y negro, con acabado brillante y un espesor apropiado, para variar.
La decoración, por otro lado, basada en autos de carreras reales, tiene un muy buen diseño y una ejecución muy pobre, tan típico en Hot Wheels, pero al menos fue hecha con tampos en azul claro, azul oscuro y negro (blanco fue añadido para la versión negra), sobre los paneles laterales y el capó; añadí detalles pintados en plateado, dorado, negro y rojo metalizado.
El molde de las ventanas (tintado en azul y ahumado respectivamente) incluyó la parrilla frontal, mientras el molde de los interiores (en negro y plateado respectivamente) incluyó la fascia de cola y funciona agradablemente para las ventanas ahumadas, pero para las azules el efecto es raro y no tan atractivo, no obstante fue un buen toque en general; la selección de ruedas plásticas fue diseño de rimes Muscle Car 5 Spokes, con labio cromado para ambas versiones y fueron hechos en Malasia…

A luxury car with the power enough inside its engine bay to being considered sports car as well or as some people designate it: a gran turismo (grand tourer), which becomes a noticeable success in competitions with pedigree, doesn’t seem to be a particularly unique case in the automotive world…

However, at the time when the New Class by BMW was introduced in the market, the brand from Bavaria was struggling to remain active in a difficult economic panorama, because in the 50s, the company underwent an important financial crisis.
The lack of appealing of its products for an increasingly affluent clientele, put BMW in a situation where it needed desperately to change its image of manufacturer of luxurious but unprofitable or basic cars and motorcycles, that were not in tune with the tastes of the time.
Precisely, the New Class, to which belongs my guest today: the 1973 BMW 3.5 CSL (E9), a Midsize 2-Door Notchback Hardtop Coupe / Grand Tourer / Sports Car – European Touring Car Championship / Deutsche Rennsport Meisterchaft Group 2 Racing Car, is a line of vehicles located in between.
In fact, the Neue Klasse laid the foundations of a new reputation for Bayerische Motoren Werke: ever since the brand became associated with luxury, performance, sportiness, producing cars with enough guts to have a prominent role in motorsports (a prestige long lost) and all these factors had a direct positive impact on its financial status.
The BMW 3.5 CSL, a designation that by the way applies to the racing car, since the street version, offered for homologation purposes, featured a 3.0 L engine, while the version for competition offered more displacement and many other modifications, including a special body kit with fender flares and it was the first work of the nascent M – Motorsport Division.
Curiously, the CSL was dubbed “Batmobile”, because of the full aero package designed to improve its performance and finally defeat the Ford Capri and Porsche 911, its previous executioners (illegal for street use in Germany, but quite striking when applied partially to the “stock” version), that gives it a rather “gothic” overall appearance, which by the way was key for its success in the different championships it participated…
Between design and production there are so many processes involved, so many people that could take good or bad decisions (the latter are taken on a regular basis, particularly when it comes to save money and please shareholders, even if that means ruin the product), that usually you find a huge difference between the original concept and the final product…
With Mattel and its products: Hot Wheels and Matchbox, that’s painfully obvious and that’s why I had low expectations when I was still acquiring products from lines of the Regular, Adult and eventually Deluxe categories: since 2018, I stopped wasting money on those items, because I got tired of its reiterated mediocrity (a combination of poor quality control and high asking price, that is just unacceptable), of the products by the red giant…
My guests for this review, which I got through the primary market, in a pair of local retail stores, pretty much 5 years ago, are up to a point an exception to the consistent mediocrity of HW and I will explain it right away: first, I appreciate the work by Fraser Campbell in terms of design, because it’s a very good representation of the CSL racing car, bearing in mind the limitations of a toy car by the brand of the flaming logo.
They have diecast body and plastic chassis, in white and black respectively, with a decent level of detail, there is a good dose of realism; the paint jobs were made in white and black, with glossy finishing and an appropriate thickness, for a change.
The decoration, on the other hand, based on the actual racing cars, has a very good design and a very poor execution, so typical in Hot Wheels, but at least it was made with tampos in light blue, dark blue and red (white was added for the black version), on the side panels and the hood; I added painted details in silver, golden, black and metallic red.
The mold of the windows (tinted in blue and smoked respectively) included the front grille, while the mold of the interiors (in black and silver respectively) included the tail fascia and it works nicely for the smoked windows, but for the blue ones the effect is weird and not so appealing, nonetheless it was a good touch in general; the selection for the plastic wheels was Muscle Car 5 Spokes rims design, with chrome lip for both versions and they were made in Malaysia…
